Man hiding ex-president Saakashvili in his flat sent to pretrial detention

Elguja Tsomaia, who was hiding Georgian ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili in Tbilisi, Sanzona neighbourhood, in his flat was sent to pretrial detention by Tbilisi City Court earlier today. 

He has been charged with non-informing police about Saakashvili’s whereabouts, who was wanted by Georgian law enforcers. 

Saakashvili was arrested in Tbilisi on October 1, one day before the country’s municipal elections. 

The ex-president, who is a citizen of Ukraine and is currently holding an official post in the country, returned to Georgia after eight years to support his United National Movement party win the race and change the Georgina Dream government via an early parliamentary election. 

Saakashvili was convicted in Georgia back in 2018 in absentia and was sentenced to six years in prison. 

He says the charges against him are unfounded.
