Sweden’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Maria Stenergard, has voiced concerns over recent political developments in Georgia, saying the country was “moving very quickly in the opposite direction” of European Union integration. She made the remarks in Brussels ahead of the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting.

“We are very worried about the developments in Georgia. They are taking steps very quickly in the opposite direction of EU membership. This is something that troubles me deeply,” Stenergard stated.

She noted that the European Union was working to support the people of Georgia, particularly those committed to democratic values and press freedom.

“We are trying in every possible way to support the citizens who are working for democracy and freedom of the press, which we consider to be issues of urgent importance in Georgia,” the Swedish Foreign Minister added.
