Georgian Dream MP Mariam Lashkhi on Wednesday defended the Government’s higher education reform during a plenary session, stating that the package is the result of “well-considered, thoroughly analysed” work by professionals and experts.

Lashkhi said the reform team would be remembered as a group of reformers who did not shy away from pressure, criticism or political challenges.

“Today we enter history as reformers who care about our children and the future of our country,” she said, adding that the opposition had taken a stance “against the future of the country, its children and parents”.

She criticised the opposition for what she described as a lack of awareness of the consultation process, noting that the Ministry of Education held multiple meetings with university rectors and stakeholders during the drafting of the reform.

“This decision shows once again that we are focused on the people and their well-being. We will undoubtedly enter history as reformers who were not intimidated by pseudo-liberal bullying, nor by the challenges you face today,” she told opposition lawmakers.
