Medvedev described nuclear arms as “an emergency and extremely dangerous weapon for all humanity,” but stressed that their use would be considered in circumstances where the country’s survival was at stake

Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council, has said that Russia could use nuclear weapons if the “fate of the country” were at risk.

Speaking in an interview last week, Medvedev described nuclear arms as “an emergency and extremely dangerous weapon for all humanity,” but stressed that their use would be considered in circumstances where the country’s survival was at stake.

He added that Russia was not seeking a global conflict, noting - “Russians are not crazy.”

When asked whether the Russian leadership had discussed the potential use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine, Medvedev said the country “adheres strictly to its nuclear doctrine, which clearly defines when such weapons could be deployed, and no separate deliberation is necessary.”

Medvedev also pointed out that Russia had not used nuclear weapons to date, indicating that the country has not faced threats severe enough to warrant such action.
