MEP Anna Fotyga to observe Georgian municipal elections

MEP Anna Fotyga has tweeted in Georgian that she will travel to Georgia to observe the October 2 municipal elections.

She says that the elections are of ‘high importance’ and it is necessary to hold the race ‘in a peaceful and a transparent environment despite current tension.’ 

 

71 local and 33 international organisations have been registered to observe the elections.

 

Local NGOs say that the election environment is quite tense and polarised. 

 

The ruling Georgian Dream party claims that the opposition is preparing to stage provocations on the election day, while the opposition is accusing the government of using administrative resources and exercising pressure on opponents.
