Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs on Thursday said 31 foreign nationals had been detained during a special immigration control operation aimed at combating illegal migration.

Officers from the Migration Department carried out a series of coordinated inspections at various locations and facilities to identify individuals residing in the country without legal grounds.

The detainees included citizens of India, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Kenya, Pakistan, China, Belarus and Kazakhstan.

Authorities said the individuals were found to be in violation of the requirements set out in Georgia’s law on the legal status of foreigners and stateless persons.

The detained individuals have been transferred to the Migration Department’s temporary accommodation centre. Officials said procedures were currently underway to deport them from the country.
