Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili has published an open letter addressed to the President of the United States, Donald Trump, in which he expressed his deep respect for the American leader and voiced hope that Trump's presidency would strengthen the United States and bring prosperity to both the American people and the world. Kavelashvili underlined that restoring relations with Washington and renewing the strategic partnership between Georgia and the United States “from scratch” remains one of the top priorities of Georgia’s foreign policy, reminding that this partnership was terminated by the Biden administration shortly before Trump’s inauguration.
The Georgian President expressed regret that despite the full alignment of values between Tbilisi and Washington, the Trump administration has not yet paid due attention to Georgia, which, he said, causes bewilderment in Georgian society. According to him, while Trump has successfully established close relations with Georgia’s neighbors, brokering peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia, cooperating actively with Turkey, and even restoring a partnership with Russia, the lack of focus on Georgia raises questions about the sincerity and consistency of the US approach to peace and stability in the region.
Kavelashvili also drew attention to the influence of what he termed the “deep state” in Georgia, accusing organizations such as USAID and NED of attempting to destabilize the country and undermine peace. He stressed that four attempted revolutions in Georgia had been prevented thanks to the wisdom and unity of the Georgian people. He warned that US passivity in this regard is concerning. The President underlined that the Georgian people should associate the United States not with chaos, destabilization, and propaganda, but with peace, stability, respect for sovereignty, and traditional values.
In his concluding remarks, Kavelashvili emphasized his personal readiness to contribute to the creation of a concrete roadmap for rebuilding the US-Georgia strategic partnership on a fair and respectful basis. He called on Washington to change its attitude toward Georgia, noting that it is important for the Georgian people to see in the United States not the “deep state,” but a strong American president who stands for peace and stability.
