Georgia’s former President, Mikheil Saakashvili, has been transferred from the Vivamedi Tbilisi Clinic to Penitentiary Facility No. 12, the Special Penitentiary Service of Georgia said on Wednesday.

“As is publicly known, inmate Saakashvili was transferred to the Vivamedi clinic on May 12, 2022, to receive inpatient medical care, where he had been under treatment until now”, the agency said in its statement.

“In accordance with Georgian legislation, the return of a patient from a civilian hospital to a penitentiary facility is carried out based on the attending physician’s decision, taking into account the patient’s health condition. Since inmate Saakashvili’s health status is satisfactory and he no longer requires inpatient treatment, he has been discharged from the civilian clinic and returned to Penitentiary Facility No. 12, where he will continue serving his sentence under general conditions”, the statement added.
