Zagreb: Croatian cellist Ana Ruсner is experimenting with classical music weaving it into modern folk compositions. Rucner played in the Maribor Philharmonic Orchestra, represented Bosnia and Herzegovina together with the singers Dalal Midhat-Talakić, Deen and Jasmin Fazlić Jala at the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 with the song “Ljubav je” which means “Love is”.
The Croatian star is a sportive black-haired brown-eyed girl. Ana sings, dances and is one whole with her instrument – a cello which she calls her soul. She wears makeup only during her performances. Enjoys silence and is inspired by the road towards sunset. One of her dreams is to sing with José Carerras and she knows that Michael Jackson’s music will never die.
Ana revives the music of Balkan Gypsies, giving it a second wind after the compositions of Goran Bregovic.
In an interview for Front News Ana told about life after Eurovision, joint performances with musicians, about what she would have done in life if she had not become a musician and that cello is almost the same to the human voice.
“My experience in Sweden and performance on Eurovision was really unique and will remember it for a long time,” Ana told Front News International. “But I was featuring, cello was accompanying a beautiful song written by Bosnian singers Deen and Dalal.”
When she has own concerts she usually plays for one hour or even longer with an entire multimedia show introducing videos of beautiful Croatia and an audience really like it.
“It is difficult to say if I had benefits from Eurovision as I perform very often in Croatia and other countries throughout the World, and nothing changed in the last year. This year I have celebrated 15th anniversary of my career and I am really grateful for all the possibilities that arise on my path, and one of them was certainly Eurovision Song Contest.”
Couple weeks ago she has introduced her latest video about Nikola Tesla, world’s known inventor and scientist, in the occasion of his anniversary.
“The title of the video is Tesla’s Fields and the idea was to present his life and inventions accompanied with a great instrumental piece of the famous Croatian composer Blagoje Bersa – Sunny Fields,” said Rucner, adding that she had a dream to realize this video for a couple of years and the right moment and inspiration perfectly matched few months ago.
At the end of September together with the Croatian Tourist Board of Gospić and Croatian Mountain Rescue Service she will introduce the new video. Ana Rucner describes it as an “entirely different from all of my earlier videos and I am really looking forward to that.”
“Right now I have many concerts during the summer and in autumn I have some plans for new videos, cooperation.”
Her creative vibrations are constantly in on mode and now she managed to accomplish all the cooperation she wants.
“Recently I have also made a video with a choir of nuns – song from the movie Sisters act and I was so happy as religion plays very important role in my life,” said Rucner. “There is no specific musician I’d like to collaborate on these projects.”
“I am more focused on projects and depending on the type of the song I usually invite guest musicians to perform with me. There are many esteemed Croatian and international musicians with whom I have already played, and believe to have many more successful cooperation in the future.”
“I was dreaming to play with José Carerras,” Ana says with the light inide of her voice. “Last year Carreras came to Croatia and invited me to meet him. It was so magical. If I’m dreaming, then I try to make my dream come true. We played with Carreras.”
Front News asked Ana Rucner to try to imagine if everyone pf musician would be alive, who does she want to share the stage with.
“Everybody is alive? Great. Michael Jackson,” Rucner told and paused. “If he would be alive I’d like to share stage with him. This guy will be always alive. His arrangements are still much more modern that today’s music. I would like to play that music. He is my favorite. He is the King of all.”
Also she’d like to play with Rostropovich, who died two years ago. “He was the best one. I’d like to have this opportunity to play with him.”
Ana Rucner accepts new genres, new instruments and as she told, always open to new musical challenges and attractive songs.
“I like to create new music, accept new genres. For example, this year I have introduced gypsy music at my repertoire,” she performed it with her friends recently in Adriatic Sea city of Dubrovnik. “Professional musicians from different orchestras. I am always open to new musical challenges and attractive songs,” Ana added.
She started to play cello in the age of 6 and since those time trying to mix all kinds of music especially classical and folk music with her instrument. But she never plays jazz.
“Oh, the jazz is the only kind of music I never play. My parents have the quartet playing jazz mostly,” Ana explains. “For jazz you have to be really into that kind of music. I’m more into rock, classical, gipsy music. Gipsy music is something amazing. I’m preparing new program right now.”
Her parents and siblings are musicians, playing cello and violin. She couldn’t choose another way and not to become a musician.
“Since I was born I was surrounded by music. It became my way of life, my passion and my profession as well,” she told. “I had never regretted for devoting my life to music, it was my choice.”
Ana’s parents wanted her to be happy and to choose any profession which would make her satisfied and music was the first and only choice. “I feel music through my veins, and it is great way to express feelings, passion, but also fears, desires. The instrument I am playing, cello, is the closest to human voice, able to express so many tones and vibrations and that is the main reason why I chose it.”
“I cannot even imagine doing anything else but music,” Ana told answering the question who she would become if not a musician. “While playing I enjoy every moment, music takes me into another dimension and I am so happy to be able to convey emotions and experiences to my dear public.”
“But, maybe one day I might additionally undergo an education for Culture Management, as I have already gathered a lot of experience with organizing and performing which, connected to my restless creative spirit might be new, interesting challenge for me.”
But Ana Rucner calls the silence as a gift and privilege. And she enjoys it.
“I usually listen to the silence and I never wearing make-up, only when I’m on the stage. It is very important to have your peace,” Rucner told adding that it is the sense of being peaceful. “I’m living here in Zagreb in the woods. It’s great place where I can play cello anytime.”
Her whole family live in there and they all are musicians. Music is all the time on. “It is a present to listen to the silence. This is a gift, believe me. But when I’m driving a car with my 11-year-old son I listen to the music he listening to. He knows what’s the heat in the moment.”
Telling on her place to get inspiration from, she describes it as “on the road to”.
“It is very strange but when I’m traveling by my car, while I’m driving car alone, I don’t know why but when I listen to the radio, something or nothing I always get an inspiration,” told Rucner. “I don’t know how but it is happening.”
During the trip on a ferry she thought up a video she made later for Croatian National Tourist Office two years ago before her coutry joined European Union. “I’ve just seen this picture in a ferry. All at one came to my head – the video, whole project.”
“So, always when I am in a ride or fly I feel the inspiration. But while I’m in the woods or on the beach I never get an inspiration. Only while I’m on the road. Isn’t it crazy?”
