Anders Fogh Rasmussen, former secretary-general of NATO, says that the current political tension in Georgia, polarisation and the recent arrest of the country’s former president Mikheil Saakashvili are playing a negative role for Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic integration.

He has told Voice of America that Georgia’s internal, foreign and security policies are ‘closely connected,’ which the government should take into account and take steps to stabilise the political situation.

Rasmussen stated that under a real democracy, everyone should respect a fair distribution of power between political forces, otherwise, suspicion will always exist around the country.

He stated that the NATO members, which are against Georgia’s integration into the alliance, may use the political crisis to make Georgia’s integration more complicated.
