NATO maintains its position that Russia has been unduly aggressive towards its neighbors, such as Ukraine and Georgia.

This position does not aim to provoke Russia, but remains true to adequately describe the reality, Patrick Turner, NATO Assistant Secretary General for Defence Policy and Planning stated while in Tallinn.

During the meeting of foreign ministers of the Bucharest Nine Initiative yesterday, which includes Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania and Slovakia, Turner said that the NATO door remains open both for Georgia and Ukraine.

He stated that there has been no direct dialogue between Russia and NATO for 18 months.

“The closure of Russia’s mission to NATO and the closure of NATO offices in Moscow do not mean that the dialogue is now over.

We regret that, but we are still open to dialogue,” said Turner.Russia believes that NATO enlargement to S.Caucasus is a threat for its security.
