Political expert Nika Chitadze says the European Parliament’s newly adopted resolution once again confirms the European Union’s support for strengthening Georgia’s democratic institutions and its firm stance against abuse of power by the ruling Georgian Dream party.
In comments to Front News, Chitadze emphasized that the resolution — which demands the immediate release of jailed media manager Mzia Amaglobeli and denounces her arrest as “politically motivated” — serves as a symbol of the Georgian government’s crackdown on dissent, especially targeting journalists, opposition parties, and civil society activists.
“The resolution highlights the EU’s ongoing support for the development of Georgia’s democratic institutions, while also condemning the ruling party’s excessive use of power. The mention of Mzia Amaglobeli’s case shows how the current de facto authorities are suppressing independent voices,” said Chitadze.
He called on EU executive institutions, especially the European Commission, the European Council, and individual EU member states, to now take concrete action by imposing targeted sanctions on Georgian Dream and its key figures.
“The next step must come from the EU’s executive bodies. It is time for the European Commission and, more importantly, the European Council and member states to implement sanctions against Georgian Dream representatives,” Chitadze stated.
The European Parliament resolution, adopted on June 19, demands the unconditional release of political prisoners in Georgia, including Amaglobeli, and calls for the repeal of repressive legislation. It condemns government pressure on independent media, NGOs, and political opposition, and urges the EU to enhance its support for Georgia’s civil society and media freedom.
