Georgia’s opposition alliance announced on 31 March the start of a two-month national mobilization campaign, culminating in a large public rally in Tbilisi on 26 May, the country’s Independence Day.

In a statement on Tuesday, the alliance stressed the need for broad citizen participation to push for a change in government.

“Today, 31 March, the opposition alliance is launching a national mobilization campaign. While this initiative comes from the nine parties in our alliance, the task is not theirs alone - it belongs to everyone,” the statement said.

The alliance outlined its goals as increasing communication with citizens, countering government propaganda, channeling public anger and desire for change into political action, and overcoming fear deliberately sown by the authorities. They stressed that meaningful protest requires collective action, drawing a symbolic parallel to the 31 March 1991 referendum on independence.

The campaign will continue until 26 May, when the alliance plans a major rally in the capital. “We invite all political and civic groups to join. We do not promise an easy path or miracles, but we know one thing: if we stop, change will not come; if we act, regime change is only a matter of time and effort,” the statement added.
