One of Georgian opposition leaders, former Tbilisi Mayor Gigi Ugilava, has not been found guilty in the case of beating athletes in Tbilisi International Airport back in December 2019.

A judge in Tbilisi City Court said that there was not sufficient evidence to convict him.

Ugulava claimed that the incident happened in the most protected place at the airport, beyond the passport control area, and it was ‘staged’ by the current Georgian Dream government.

Ugulava said that he was sitting at the table when an unknown individual approached him and began arguing, noting that ‘it was funny to believe that he was able to beat athletes.’

Ugulava had to spent several years in prison under the Georgian Dream government for embezzlement of state funds.
