The United National Movement opposition party has registered a bill which, if approved, will ban Russian citizens and companies from participation in state tenders.

The party member Levan Khabeishvili says that about 200 companies are registered in Russia and carry out economic activities in Georgia.

“It is simple: we must not direct money to the Russian economy,” Khabeishvili said earlier today.

In previous days the opposition slammed Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze over the tender won by a Russian company which should have provided metro carriages for the capital city.

Kaladze said that the tender was announced back in 2020 and now the solution will be based on the move of EBRD which had allocated money for the purchase of carriages.

He said that the Russian company which had won the tender may or may not be on the list of sanctioned companies by the European ban.

The approval of the bill in the state legislature will require the support of at least 76 MPs, which means that the opposition will need the support of the ruling Georgian Dream party.
