Orbán calls for EU to review sanctions on Russia, citing energy price impact

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has called for the European Union to reconsider its sanctions against Russia, arguing that they are driving up energy prices and harming the bloc’s economic competitiveness. Speaking to Reuters, Orbán stated that the EU’s current sanctions policy was unsustainable, as it contributes to rising energy costs.

“Prices for energy must be reduced. This means that the sanctions should be revised, because under the conditions of the current sanctions policy, prices will not decrease,” Orbán said.

He also highlighted the disparity in energy costs between Europe and the United States, noting that American companies pay a quarter of the price that European businesses spend on gas and electricity. Orbán insisted that this gap could only be closed by revising the sanctions policy.
