Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has praised his Georgian counterpart Irakli Kobakhidze as a “hero of Georgia” and a “successful leader” during a speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) held in Budapest on Thursday.
Speaking at the gathering of right-wing politicians and thinkers on Wednesday, Orbán lauded Kobakhidze for his “opposition to liberal movements” and for what he described as his role in driving economic growth in Georgia.
“The hero of Georgia, the international patriot, the man who won the elections is Irakli Kobakhidze,” Orbán said, according to simultaneous translation. “He went against the liberal movements, defeated everyone and is the biggest economic growth driver in the country.”
Orbán also addressed Georgia’s geopolitical situation, referencing Russia’s occupation of 20% of Georgian territory. “20% of this country has been taken by the Russian bear, but he [Kobakhidze] did not bow his head to Brussels,” he said, adding that Kobakhidze “became the new Great Britain,” in what appeared to be a symbolic reference to national sovereignty and independence from EU influence.
