The Foreign Affairs Committee of the Georgian Parliament has supported a draft resolution proposed by the ruling Georgian Dream party in support of Ukraine.
The committee did not consider the opposition’s request to add Russia as an aggressor in the text.
The opposition dislikes the draft resolution as it does not directly say that Russia is an aggressor, and that it is responsible for the current tension over Ukraine.
Instead they are supporting a draft resolution on the issue proposed by the For Georgia party.
The draft resolution by the ruling party is entitled “on possible military escalation in Ukraine”.
It expresses deep concerns over the possible military escalation in Ukraine and condemns any intention that may be directed against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of a sovereign state, which poses a new threat not only to Ukraine but also to regional peace and security.
The document says that membership of NATO is a sovereign right of the state and that any attempt to restrict this right by military-political means is ‘absolutely unacceptable.’
The draft resolution states that the prevention of war in Ukraine should be a major concern of the international community and expressed solidarity with the friendly Ukrainian people, who could be severely harmed by any possible military escalation.
“In view of all the above, the Parliament of Georgia calls on the Government of Georgia, through the use of diplomatic instruments and in close coordination with strategic partners, to continue its contribution to the prevention of war in Ukraine.”
The adoption of the document requests the support of at least 76 MPs.
The ruling party has more than 85 MPs in the state legislature.
