The Pentagon has confirmed a blast at the Abbey Gate of the Kabul airport earlier today, where the US, UK and the Turkish troops are stationed as thousands are trying to free the country following the Taliban’s capture of the Afghan capital on August 15.
The US Assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs John Kirby has tweeted that the number of casualties is still unknown.
The US Embassy in Kabul states that the explosion was ‘large.’
European Council President Charles Michel has tweeted that he is ‘concerned by the exposition’ as ‘security safe passage to the airport remains vital’.
NATO and the US troops, including 870 Georgian soldiers, began leaving Afghanistan starting May 2021, after the US and the Taliban signed an agreement back in 2020 under Donald Trump ‘to end the 18-year-war.’ Georgia is now participating in the evacuation of civilians from Kabul.
