German Ambassador to Georgia Peter Fischer on Saturday denied reports that a meeting at the German Embassy in Tbilisi on Thursday encouraged “radical Iran scenarios”, calling such claims “entirely false” and an “aggressive disinformation” campaign.
“That is entirely false, untruthful. Nothing of the sort came up. On behalf of Germany, I refute this aggressive disinformation”, he said.
Fischer wrote on social media that the meeting, attended by members of the Georgian Youth Union, focused on young people’s concerns about obstacles to Georgia’s path toward the European Union, education reform, and the country’s deeply polarised political environment.
“We talked about young people's concern that Georgia’s path to the EU is blocked, education reform and a deeply polarised environment where dissent is labeled as treason, when in reality it is the essence of democracy. We need all the youth for a good future”, he wrote.
The reports by Imedi TV alleged that several activists were present at the meeting and that discussions included the funding of protests, future strategy, and purportedly “Iranian scenarios”. The attendees, including Luka Mishveladze, Megi Peradze, Archil Gochitashvili, David Sekhniashvili, Sergey Kancheli, Nikoloz Khosroshvili, Anni Pridonashvili, and David Khashiashvili, confirmed the meeting with the Ambassador but stated that the discussion focused solely on Georgia’s EU integration.
