Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili has announced the launch of a large-scale construction programme which will include dozens of new schools, renovation of a number of educational institutions and a residence with 1,000 apartments for police officers in capital Tbilisi.

Garibashvili said earlier today that policemen will have to pay only 100 USD per square meter in the block of flats, while the remaining sum would be covered through budgetary funds.

Speaking about the construction and renovation of educational institutions, Garibashvili claimed that the project will benefit both the government and construction companies, and create more than 20,000 jobs in the course of three-four years.

“We have developed an initiative which I announced a few weeks ago. This applies to the acceleration of economic growth, the improvement of public infrastructure- a large-scale construction program, and today we are launching the program via installment,” Garibashvili stated.

He said that the total amount of funding will be about 2.5,- 2.3 billion GEL.

“We will start with two billion GEL at this stage. This amount will be available to companies.

We will offer the construction sector to attract additional funds with our guaranteed order to get involved in this program. I think this will be a universal solution. On the one hand, we will implement the planned projects on time, while on the other hand, the process will help economic growth,” Garibashvili said.

Garibashvili stated that 80 schools and 90 kindergartens will be built within the next three years under this programme, while many others will be renovated.

“We have already built 175 schools over the past eight-nine years and more than 220 schools have been renovated, but that is not enough. We should care about 800 schools of which 80 should be built, while the remaining will see full or partial renovation. The budget will be about one billion GEL,” Garibashvili said.

He stated that 90 kindergartens will be built and 412 kindergartens will be renovated across the country.
