Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili has addressed crowds at the ruling Georgian Dream party large assembly earlier today in central Tbilisi, where he said that ‘sooner or later justice will prevail,’ and that the ‘main figure of the United National Movement bloody regime,’ former president, Mikheil Saakashvili, will have to spend several years in prison.
He stated that the ruling Georgian Dream party alone has managed to ensure a long-term peace and development of the country and has carried out ‘fundamental reforms.’
“We will never tolerate the suppression of the Georgian people, betrayal of the country, discreditation of the church, and all the individuals who had committed crimes will be held accountable,” Garibashvili said.
He claimed that the Georgian Dream is focused on the future. However, noted that the public must not also forget the past and the mistakes made in previous years.
Garibashvili stated that the municipal election run-offs on October 30 will be ‘the end of Saakashvili’s United National Movement’, and the government will focus only on the issues which trouble the Georgian people.
GD head Irakli Kobakhidze stated that the run-offs are ‘ an unique opportunity to end the polarisation in the country and the UNM party ‘which has been sparking tension and hampering the state development over the past 18 years.
The municipal election run-offs will be held in only 20 of 64 constituencies.
The GD and the UNM candidates will compete in 17 constituencies.
The GD won all the remaining 44 constituencies in the first round of elections on October 2.
The ruling party also came first in the proportional part of the elections with 47 percent of the vote.
