US President Donald Trump has informed Congress that the war with Iran is over, according to Politico, which reports it has obtained a White House letter outlining the administration’s position.
The communication comes as the conflict in the Middle East reportedly reached a 60-day statutory deadline, under which military operations are required to cease unless lawmakers authorise continued use of force.
“Since 7 April, there have been no exchanges of fire between the United States and Iran. The hostilities that began on 28 February have been terminated,” the President stated in the letter.
According to Politico, the notification appears aimed at preventing escalation at a politically sensitive moment, with Trump facing potential pressure from within the Republican Party over the continuation of military action without a clear end strategy.
The President also said that the end of the conflict would lead to lower energy prices.
“Once this war is over, the price of petrol, oil and everything else will come down, but right now the stock market has hit record highs. More people are working in the United States than at any time in our country’s history. We are doing very well. Petrol prices are high at the moment. Other prices have come down, but petrol remains high,” Trump said.
He added that ending the war would also mean “a world without Iranian nuclear weapons.”
