Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili says that yesterday’s municipal elections in Georgia were held in a free, transparent and fair environment despite an utterly polarised pre-election environment.

She said that by actively voting in the race, the Georgian people have shown  that they ‘want and need peace and no destabilisation’.

Zurabishvili stated that the elections were important for Georgia’s future and that the international community was observing closely how the country conducted the polls.

She wished to see more women involved in the elections and in local municipalities as well as better representation of smaller parties ‘which are needed to end political polarisation in the country.’
