Prosecutor Levan Vepkhvadze says that a former Georgian law enforcement official supported ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili to illegally cross from Ukraine into Georgia at the end of September 2021.

Vepkhvadze has not identified the former official.

A trial hearing is held in Tbilisi City Court today in the case.

Saakashvili will not attend the trial because of ‘a poor health condition,’ his lawyers stated yesterday.

The third president is a citizen of Ukraine.

He says he returned after eight years in political exile to remove the current state leadership from power.

Saakashvili claims he is not interested in taking a high post.  Four other individuals are charged with concealment of a crime in a border crossing case.
