Georgia’s former State Security Service chief to chair Regional Development Ministry

Georgia’s Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Wednesday announced the establishment of the Ministry of Regional Development as an independent governmental body who will be chaired by Grigol Liluashvili, the outgoing Head of the State Security Service.

In his press comments, Kobakhidze highlighted Liluashvili’s “extensive experience” in regional governance, having previously served as Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Regional Policy and Self-Government.

“One of the most important missions of the new ministry will be to ensure the maximum effectiveness of measures related to regional development,” Kobakhidze claimed. He noted that the “growth of Georgia’s economy has led to increased local government budgets, now surpassing four billion GEL” (excluding Tbilisi).

Kobakhidze confirmed that his government had submitted the relevant bill to Parliament. Following consultations with the parliamentary majority, the legislation is expected to be adopted during the session week of April 15-18.

The PM further commended Liluashvili’s contributions to national security over the past six years and expressed confidence in his ability to lead the newly established ministry.

Irakli Karseladze will continue in his role as Minister of Infrastructure, maintaining oversight of Georgia’s infrastructure projects alongside the new regional development ministry, Kobakhidze added.
