A Georgian household where two members each earn 1300 GEL a month - including income from rent - is already considered liable to pay property tax, opposition MP Roman Gotsiridze has said, calling for urgent reform of the system.
Gotsiridze told Front News that many families remained unaware of their obligation and risked facing heavy fines if they failed to file their tax declarations by 31 October and pay by 15 November.
He added that a three-person household where each earned 880 GEL per month also falls under the tax requirement - a situation he said now affected almost every second family in the country.
According to the politician, Georgians were taxed on all types of property, including apartments, cars, ancestral homes in villages, garages, plots of land and unused commercial premises.
“These people are potential targets of repressive measures and many are unable to afford the tax,” Gotsiridze said, arguing that the system had become outdated since its introduction more than 20 years ago.
He noted that incomes and prices had risen significantly since then, turning what was originally a tax affecting a small share of the population into a widespread burden.
Gotsiridze said his draft bill to update the rules had been pending in parliament for three years, while the government had failed to act despite publicly acknowledging the need for change.
“The government is holding people hostage,” he added, urging authorities to decouple the issue from ongoing discussions about corporate property tax.
