US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has confirmed that the United States’ military operation against Venezuela has concluded and that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro is currently in custody in the United States.
According to US Senator Mike Lee, Rubio personally informed him of the developments.
“I just spoke with Marco Rubio. He informed me that Nicolás Maduro has been detained by US military personnel on criminal charges,” Lee wrote on social media.
Rubio reportedly indicated that no further military action in Venezuela is expected, as Maduro’s detention marked the primary objective of the operation.
US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau also commented on the developments, stating that Maduro will face justice for his actions.
“A new dawn for Venezuela. The tyrant is gone. He will now finally stand trial for his crimes,” Landau said.
Earlier today the United States launched a series of strikes on Venezuela’s capital, Caracas, with explosions reported across the city. President Maduro subsequently declared a state of war. Later, US President Donald Trump announced that Maduro had been detained and removed from the country.
