Head of the Georgian Dream (GD) ruling party Irakli Kobakhidze says that if Georgia joins international sanctions against Russia for its  invasion of Ukraine, the move will lead to serious economic and social problems for the citizens of Georgia and trigger threats for military escalation.

“If we join the sanctions, it will change nothing for Russia. However, the move will cause serious social and economic problems for Georgians,” Kobakhidze said earlier today.

He added that imposing sanctions on Russia also means “Georgia is getting involved in the conflict.”

“NATO member states have the luxury of that. If you look at the world map in terms of sanctions, you will see that the co-participants in the sanctions are NATO member states and, moreover, there is a NATO member state which has refused to take the step,” Kobakhidze said.He claimed that the country’s international partners have a “soft attitude” towards Georgia’s stance on the sanctions as they are aware of the threats.
