Nikoloz Samkharadze, chairman of Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee from the ruling Georgian Dream party has appealed to the EU to remove the term South Ossetia from official documents as it was created by Stalin back in 1922 and the Georgian constitution does not recognize it.

MEP and EP Rapporteur for Georgia Sven Mikser, who is currently visiting the country, has promised the request will be considered.

The central Georgian government uses either Tskhinvali or Samachablo for South Ossetia to describe the country’s Russian-occupied region in the central part of Georgia.

Tskhinvali and Abkhazia regions, accounting for 20 percent of the Georgian territory, are currently occupied by Russia.

Russia is also engaged with the creeping occupation of Georgian lands.
