The ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party MP, former Parliament Speaker, Archil Talakvadze, says that the country’s “radical opposition” is using “all levers” to “prevent” the country’s EU integration as Georgia officially applied for this in March of this year.
By the statement on Monday, Talakvadze responded to opposition’s allegations on the arrest of the head of the opposition-minded Mtavari channel Nika Gvaramia “on political grounds” and that the “move is expected to harm the country’s EU integration.”
“They (the opposition) are doing it only for their own narrow political interests, the radical opposition has lost its real function – to oppose the government and they are moving to oppose Georgia and fight against the country in international forums. The public should be aware of the anti-heroes who are working against Georgia’s European perspective. It was exactly the same process during the discussion of the EU-Georgia visa liberalization process several years ago,” Talakvadze said.
Gvaramia was sentenced to three years and six months in prison last week for abuse of power while managing Rustavi 2 TV.
