“Looking forward to the 8th straight win in elections since 2012. Unprecedented winning streak in Georgian history,” Samkharadze said, as the assembly took place prior to the second round of municipal elections on Saturday.
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili stated during the assembly that the GD alone has managed in Georgian history to maintain a long-term peace and stability.
He also said that the Georgian Dream government has taken ‘genuine steps’ to carry out fundamental reforms and ensure the rule of law.
Garibashvili reiterated that former United National Movement officials, including ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili, have been sent to prison as ‘they had been engaged with torture and supression of the Georgian people while in power.’
GD head Irakli Kobakhidze stated that the run-offs are ‘ an unique opportunity to end the polarisation in the country and the UNM party ‘which has been sparking tension and hampering the state development over the past 18 years.
The municipal election run-offs will be held in only 20 of 64 constituencies.
The GD and the UNM candidates will compete in 17 constituencies.
The GD won all the remaining 44 constituencies in the first round of elections on October 2.
The ruling party also came first in the proportional part of the elections with 47 percent of the vote.
