The ruling Georgian Dream will override the president’s veto if the latter uses her right against the bill on the State Inspector’s Service.
The bill has been recently initiated by the ruling party MPs and it envisages the split of the agency into two – one which will look into alleged offenses committed by law enforcement officers and another for personal data.
The Georgian Dream ruling party MP Irakli Kadagishvili says that making two separate agencies had been offered by international experts and the advice has been taken into account.
“Now we are waiting for the president’s decision,” Kadagishvili said, as the bill has already been approved with all three readings in the state legislature.
The ruling party has more than 80 MPs in parliament, while overriding the veto needs at least 76 votes.
State Inspector Londa Toloraia, however, says that the agency ‘has been punished’ for its unbiased assessments.
Foreign embassies have also condemned the abolishment of the State Inspector’s Service as it is now.
The agency was founded back in 2018.
