The Georgian Basketball Federation has announced a change in how its national teams will be represented on the international stage - all national basketball squads - including men’s, women’s, and youth teams - will now wear jerseys bearing the word საქართველო (Georgia in the Georgian language and script), replacing the previously used English version.
The decision, officially approved by FIBA (the International Basketball Federation), makes Georgia one of the first countries permitted to use its native script in official international basketball tournaments.
“This is a significant step toward promoting national identity, language, and culture in the international arena,” the Georgian Basketball Federation said in a statement.
The new design will debut at the upcoming European Youth and Women’s Championships. In August, Georgia’s senior men’s team will wear the updated uniforms at EuroBasket, one of the continent’s premier basketball tournaments.
The inscription in Georgian script will feature not only on players’ uniforms but also across team branding, digital platforms, and official promotional materials. The Bank of Georgia remains the main sponsor of the national team.
