Moldova faces ‘unprecedented attack on democracy,’ says President Sandu

Moldovan President Maia Sandu has accused “criminal groups” of attempting to undermine the country’s democratic process, describing the situation as an “unprecedented attack on freedom and democracy.”

In a recent address to the nation, Sandu revealed “clear evidence” that hostile actors sought to purchase 300,000 votes in the presidential election.

“Their goal was to undermine the democratic process,” Sandu said. “Their intention was to create fear and panic in society… We are waiting for the final results and will respond with firm decisions.”

With 98% of the votes counted, preliminary results indicate that the election will head to a second round on November 3. Sandu, who garnered 42% of the vote, is set to face off against former prosecutor Alexandru Stoianoglo, who received just over 26%.

In addition to the presidential race, Moldovans voted in a constitutional referendum on European Union integration. The election administration has processed 98.3% of the ballots, with results showing a narrow victory for the pro-EU amendment. Some 50.07% of voters supported constitutional changes for EU accession, while 49.93% opposed it.
