Davit Kacharava, a member of the People’s Power faction — an offshoot of the ruling Georgian Dream party — and a former rugby player, has been elected President of the Georgian Rugby Union.
Kacharava was the sole candidate for the position, with the registration period for presidential candidates closing on April 16.
According to the Rugby Union, Kacharava received 57 out of 58 votes cast during the election.
Holding this position does not legally interfere with his duties as a member of Parliament.
He replaces Ioseb (Soso) Tkemaladze, a business partner of Bidzina Ivanishvili, the founder of Georgian Dream. Tkemaladze had served as Rugby Union President since 2021, with his election marked by tensions and controversy.
It remains unclear where Tkemaladze will continue his activities.
