Georgian border police have detained five foreign nationals for attempting to illegally cross the Georgian-Turkish border, the Ministry of Internal Affairs announced on Wednesday.

The arrests occurred at the guarded sections of the Gorgadzeti and Sarphi border sectors of the Batumi Division in western Georgia. 

The detainees, identified only by their initials - A.P. (born in 1991), P.T. (born in 1996), S.T. (born in 1991), K.H. (born in 2002), and A.A. (born in 1994) - were allegedly attempting to bypass the official border checkpoint to cross from Georgia into Turkey.

If convicted, the suspects could face up to five years in prison.
