Georgia’s Parliament Speaker responds to Marine Le Pen verdict

Georgia’s Parliament Speaker, Shalva Papuashvili, on Monday responded to the conviction of French far-right leader Marine Le Pen, drawing parallels between France’s judicial actions and its stance on Georgia’s internal affairs.

Taking to social media, Papuashvili said “of course, I don’t want to interfere in France’s internal affairs, but then France shouldn’t interfere in Georgia’s internal affairs either. There is no low fence here.”

His comments come after a French court found Marine Le Pen guilty of misusing EU funds, sentencing her to four years in prison. The ruling divided her sentence into a two-year house arrest term, which can be served with an electronic bracelet, and a two-year suspended sentence. Additionally, Le Pen was barred from holding public office for five years.
