Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Thursday said Orthodoxy is not only a matter of faith for Georgia, but also “the foundation of national identity and historical continuity,” underscoring the role of the Orthodox Church in preserving the country’s language, culture and statehood through centuries of hardship.
Addressing the session of the International Secretariat of the Interparliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy, Papuashvili said Orthodox Christian values continue to serve as a “firm moral compass” in a world marked by rapid change, uncertainty and division.
“For Georgia, Orthodoxy is not only faith. It is the foundation of national identity and historical continuity,” Papuashvili said, adding that since Christianity was declared the state religion in the fourth century, the Georgian Orthodox tradition has played a decisive role in maintaining national unity and resilience.
He said in the era of globalisation, Orthodoxy remains relevant by helping societies balance “tradition and progress” while preserving spiritual identity and promoting peace, mutual respect and cooperation.
Papuashvili also highlighted the “special responsibility” of lawmakers, saying parliamentary work must reflect values such as respect for human dignity, protection of cultural and religious heritage, justice and commitment to the common good.
He described the Interparliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy as a “unique platform for dialogue and cooperation,” enabling member states to strengthen ties and jointly respond to common challenges.
The speaker also noted that Georgia is marking the 1,700th anniversary of the declaration of Christianity as the state religion this year, calling it a milestone in the nation’s spiritual and historical development.
Papuashvili further referred to the recent passing of the Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, saying the late patriarch had led the Church for half a century and played a historic role in reviving faith and uniting the nation during difficult times.
“Today you are in a country where we witnessed a great miracle before our eyes — the rebirth of a united, strong and steadfast nation,” Papuashvili said.
