Georgian parliament speaker meets Serbian counterpart in Belgrade

Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili has met Serbian National Assembly President Ana Brnabić during his visit to Belgrade.

Papuashvili highlighted the importance of the inaugural conference of parliament speakers from European Union candidate countries being held in the Serbian capital. The two sides stressed the need for greater exchange of experience and mutual support among EU candidate countries.

The meeting also focused on growing relations between Georgia and Serbia, with particular attention given to recent presidential visits between the two countries.

Papuashvili thanked Serbia for supporting Georgia's territorial integrity and reaffirmed Georgia's support for Serbia's territorial integrity.

The two officials discussed opportunities to deepen parliamentary cooperation, including ties between friendship groups and parliamentary committees.

They also reviewed the two countries' European integration processes and the challenges they face.

Brnabić said Serbia had been waiting for progress in its EU accession negotiations for several years, but that the process had been delayed because of opposition from several countries.

She also said Georgia was successfully developing its economy, implementing reforms and firmly defending its sovereignty.

The meeting took place during Papuashvili's visit to Serbia to attend the first conference of parliament speakers from EU candidate countries, according to the Georgian parliament's press service.
