Shota Berekashvili, Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Economic Policy Committee, on Monday said the country’s strategic goal should be to make the Middle Corridor - a trade route linking Europe and China via the South Caucasus and Central Asia - “as competitive as possible,” emphasising the need for harmonising all modes of transportation into a single system.
Speaking on Imedi TV’s Business Insider Georgia segment, Berekashvili highlighted global economic realignments and supply chain restructuring, noting that the Middle Corridor was becoming an “integral part of new supply chains.”
“Our goal should be to make the Middle Corridor maximally competitive. This means ensuring the harmonisation of airports, ports, railways, and road transportation into one system. It also requires the modernisation of these transport infrastructures,” he said.
Berekashvili pointed to ongoing and planned projects as examples, including the completion of Georgia’s East-West Highway, modernisation of the railway system, and construction of a new airport.
He argued that strengthening the Corridor would not only bolster logistics and transport but also stimulate growth in other key sectors such as tourism, real estate development, and construction.
“These sectors make up about one-third of our economy. If we can ensure rapid growth here, we will achieve strong economic growth over the next four–five years. It is essential that we capitalise on this opportunity,” Berekashvili noted.
