Mojtaba Khamenei, Iran’s newly appointed Supreme Leader, on Thursday issued his first public statement after assuming the position, pledging retaliation for what he described as the country’s “martyrs”.
Khamenei said all US military bases in the Middle East should be immediately closed and warned that such facilities could become targets.
He also stated that the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz should be maintained as a means of exerting pressure on adversaries.
According to Khamenei, Iran is targeting only foreign military bases located in neighbouring countries while maintaining a commitment to friendly relations with its regional neighbours.
The new leader thanked the Iranian public for resisting what he described as the country’s enemies and expressed appreciation for citizens who supported Iran during the conflict.
Khamenei also said that families who lost loved ones during the war would receive compensation.
“What makes it easier for us to endure these hardships is our trust in God’s grace and the knowledge that patience will help us overcome everything. I assure you that we will avenge our martyrs,” he said.
