A foreign national has been detained in Georgia on suspicion of using forged official documents, the State Security Service said on Saturday.

Speaking at a briefing, officials from the agency counterintelligence department said the individual is also accused of attempting to acquire a large amount of real estate using a fake passport belonging to another country’s citizen.

The body added the suspect allegedly sought to transfer the right to dispose of property registered in Georgia to a third party by carrying out notarial procedures under a false identity.

The agency said its counterintelligence officers are continuing “intensive” operational and investigative activities aimed at identifying individuals linked to foreign intelligence services and exposing alleged criminal activities. If convicted, the offences carry a prison sentence of between six and nine years.
