Representatives of Georgia’s newly formed opposition alliance on Friday said they held talks with the British ambassador, presenting the group’s objectives and discussing political developments in the country.
Speaking after the meeting, Tamar Chergoleishvili said alliance members outlined their plans and described the bloc as both an opposition platform and a project for what she called the democratic renewal of the opposition.
She said the group aimed to shift focus away from internal political manoeuvring and leadership-driven politics, and towards issues affecting the public.
Another alliance representative, Nika Gvaramia, said the United Kingdom had played a notable role through sanctions measures, which he described as particularly effective. He said the continuation of such measures was important.
Gvaramia added that the alliance’s strategy combined domestic protest, international pressure and presenting a political alternative to the current government.
He said the opposition group also has a broader plan for political change and for governing after any future transfer of power.
