The chair of the Georgian Young Lawyers' Association, Tamar Oniani, on Monday said discussions with representatives of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly focused on the human rights situation in Georgia.

Speaking after the meeting, Oniani said the organisation raised concerns about developments affecting civil liberties in the country.

“We spoke with the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly delegation about the human rights situation in the country, which has been documented. All these sources are public, and we discussed the main challenges that exist,” she said.

Oniani noted the discussion included what she described as a narrowing space for civil freedoms and steps that could lead to their complete elimination.

She also referred to what she said was the widespread use of criminal law mechanisms and the adoption of what she described as repressive legislation.

Oniani said the meeting also addressed the Moscow and Vienna mechanisms within the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe.

She noted that the Moscow mechanism had become a key issue on the agenda since December 2024 and that its activation had helped broaden the scope of the Vienna mechanism.

According to Oniani, the Moscow mechanism helped document the current human rights situation in the country.

“We spoke about the issues we have been raising publicly, including the Moscow mechanism,” she said.
