The Georgian Education Ministry has condemned a full-ban on the Georgian language in the country’s Russian-occupied Gali district which is mostly inhabited by ethnic Georgian population.
The ministry says that introducing the ban on the mother tongue in schools ‘is a gross violation of international law and a severe violation of human rights.’
Georgian has been replaced by Russian for all graders in up to 10 schools of Gali per the decision of the de facto Abkhaz government.
Gali came under Russian control following the Russia-Georgia 2008 war.
