A march in support of Mzia Amaglobeli, co-founder of independent Georgian media outlets Netgazeti and Batumelebi, is taking place in Tbilisi today.
The demonstration will start at 20:00 from Marjanishvili Square and end in front of the Parliament on Rustaveli Avenue. The march comes exactly one year after Amaglobeli’s arrest on January 12, 2025.
Amaglobeli, a prominent journalist known for covering corruption, human rights and government accountability, was arrested during anti‑government protests in Batumi in January 2025. Her supporters say her detention was arbitrary and politically motivated, stemming from minor protest-related incidents. During pre-trial detention, she staged a prolonged hunger strike to protest her treatment and prison conditions.
In August 2025, a Batumi court sentenced her to two years in prison, a conviction upheld on appeal in November 2025. The case has drawn condemnation from international press freedom organisations, including the International Federation of Journalists and Reporters Without Borders, who say the trial undermined media freedom in Georgia. Amaglobeli was also recognised as a Sakharov Prize laureate for her work defending free speech.
