29 years have passed since the beginning of the armed conflict in Abkhazia on August 14.
On this date, the Deputy Minister of Defense of Georgia Grigol Giorgadze paid tribute to the memory of the fallen heroes together with the State Minister for Reconciliation and Civic Equality Tea Akhvlediani and high-ranking military officials at the Heroes’ Memorial.
They laid a wreath at the memorial to the heroes killed in the battles for the unity of Georgia on the Heroes’ Square and observed a minute of silence in memory of the fighters who died for the territorial integrity of Georgia.
Representatives of the State Service for Veterans Affairs, the Government of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia and family members of the victims were also present at the Heroes’ Memorial. The hostilities in Abkhazia began at 7 am on August 14, 1992, when a convoy of Georgian Internal Troops crossed the Zugdidi-Gali administrative border. The first shot was fired in Ochamchire, near the village of Okhurei. This was the beginning of hostilities that lasted until the fall of 1993 in Abkhazia.
