US President Donald Trump has announced a two-week ceasefire agreement with Iran, aimed at easing tensions and allowing time for a potential broader peace deal. The announcement came shortly before the expiration of a US ultimatum concerning the Hormuz Strait, a strategic shipping corridor.
“Today is a great day for world peace! Iran wants this to happen, and it is enough for them! It is enough for everyone else too! Iran can now begin the reconstruction process,” Trump wrote on social media.
He added that the United States would assist with shipping operations in the Hormuz Strait, providing resources to ensure smooth traffic, and expressed optimism that this period could become a “golden age” for the Middle East.
Trump claimed the ceasefire allowed both parties two weeks to negotiate a final peace agreement. Direct talks between the US and Iran are scheduled to take place in Islamabad, Pakistan, on 10 April, with the US delegation expected to be led by Vice President Jay D. Vance.
Despite the agreement, the situation in the Hormuz Strait remains uncertain. While the US indicated it would support shipping, Iran has stated it will monitor and control all movements through the strait. Reports also suggest that Iran and Oman may introduce transit fees for vessels passing through the corridor.
The ceasefire agreement specifically requires Tehran to keep the Hormuz Strait open during the two-week period, with all shipping coordinated with Iranian authorities.
