Trump imposes new tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China

US President Donald Trump signed three executive orders on Saturday, imposing steep tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China. The measures include a 25% tariff on goods from Canada and Mexico and a 10% tariff on all imports from China, with energy imports from Canada—such as oil, natural gas, and electricity—taxed at a reduced 10% rate.

Trump justified the tariffs by invoking the International Emergency Economic Powers Act and the National Emergencies Act, citing an ongoing national emergency related to fentanyl trafficking and undocumented migration.

The move prompted swift retaliation from the United States’ North American neighbors. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum immediately ordered retaliatory tariffs, while Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that his country would impose matching 25% tariffs on up to $155 billion in U.S. imports.

China has yet to respond to the measures, but analysts warn that Beijing could introduce countermeasures, further escalating global trade tensions.
